A Brighter Burt Street

Friday, June 2, 2017 | Maggie

The corner of 36th and Burt is looking brighter these days, thanks to a generous gift from the Heider family. The Heiders saw the opportunity to highlight one of the most majestic buildings in Omaha. Head of School, Meg Huerter Brudney says, “I have been affiliated with Duchesne for more than 30 years of my life, and never did it occur to me to professionally light our building. It is a gift to Duchesne, our neighbors and our alumnae.” These new lights, installed by McKay Landscape Lighting, are aimed toward providing safety and security for the school’s students, faculty, staff and visitors. Duchesne’s campus has been surrounded by trees and lowly lit streets; the new exterior lighting will provide a safer entrance and exit when the sun goes down.
In keeping with Duchesne’s school-wide sustainability efforts, energy use was addressed when making the decision to install new lighting. McKay Landscape Lighting worked with Victory Electric to change existing energy consuming lights on the property to LED and they added 185 fixtures. With these changes, Duchesne Academy has not only lowered its energy consumption by 1,126 watts, it will contribute to an anticipated $435 annual savings.
Duchesne has long been an anchor in the midtown area and the new exterior lighting provides the school with the opportunity to highlight the historical integrity of the building. Duchesne will continue to be a guiding light in a neighborhood with deep roots in Omaha. We invite you take a lap around the school at dusk and see the beautiful lighting. Capture a photo of your visit and share it with us on social media by tagging Duchesne Academy and using “#brighterburt”.
