Paris was again becoming dangerous and Louis was forced to flee. Sophie was able to return to Joigny again, much to her mother’s delight, who hoped she would marry and settle down close to her. Sophie entered into the family life of her sister, who by this time had three children. But her health had been permanently damaged by Louis’ treatment, especially her digestive system. Her time of respite at home was not to last.  Louis returned in 1799 and Sophie rejoined him. The routine of classes and study resumed only to be broken by returns to Joigny at the grape harvest to help at home. But Sophie and Louis were about to meet someone who would change their lives forever.
